A new impulse to agricultural development of Cyprus can be given by cultivation of truffles, which are in gourmets’ requisition. It is presupposed that these valuable mushrooms’ spores will be bedded into olive trees’ rootstock and after four years this will give a possibility to gather a harvest of truffles. This point was in question at the meeting that was chaired by the minister of agriculture and natural resources Timis Ethimiou and with participation of his department‘s different sections’ representatives. The meeting was held in the context of agricultural activity extension support and with the purpose to increase those persons’ income that are at that field. Members of the meeting were represented data, proving the fact that the soil of the new irrigated olive groves, grown according to the biological method without usage of chemical fertilizers, can be used for the further successful truffle cultivation. In Europe and America the whole harvest of truffles is reserved by hypermarkets, specialized shops and restaurants in advance. From all eternity wild truffles are considered among local inhabitants as dainty, but only few of them can determine places of this mushrooms growing and this secret the locals do not hurry to share.
It’s very possible that many villas owners in Cyprus will choose this new for them type of business. I wish them good luck!
